  Types of Conditionals There are several types of conditional sentences , each serving a unique function in communication. These include zero, first, second, third, and mixed conditionals. Zero Conditional The zero conditional is used for general truths or laws of nature. It is formed using the present simple tense in both the "if" clause and the main clause. ·         Example: If you heat water to 100 degrees Celsius, it boils. First Conditional The first conditional is used for real or possible situations in the future.
