Past Simple
Forming the Past Simple
The past simple is used for completed actions in the past.
Regular verbs add -ed (or -d if the verb ends in *e*):
work → worked
live → lived
study → studied (consonant + *y* → ied)
Irregular verbs have unique past forms:
go → went
see → saw
write → wrote
Using the Past Simple
We use the past simple:
For completed actions at a specific past time:
She finished her homework at 8 PM.
They visited Paris last summer.
For past habits or repeated actions (often with adverbs like often, always, never):
He always walked to school when he was young.
We never ate fast food as kids.
For a series of completed actions in the past:
I woke up, brushed my teeth, and left for work.
With past time expressions like:
yesterday, last week, in 2010, when I was a child
Negative & Question Forms
Negative: did not (didn’t) + base verb
She didn’t go to the party.
Questions: Did + subject + base verb?
Did you call him yesterday?
Past Simple vs. Past Perfect
Past Simple: The action happened at a specific past time.
I ate breakfast at 8 AM.
Past Perfect: The action happened before another past action.
